Ultra-Processed Food

Ultra-Processed Food

Ultra-processed foods

Processed food ≠ automatically unhealthy food

  1. Food reward and reinforcement

  2. Palatability

  3. Energy density

  4. Eating rate

  5. Food texture and structure

  6. Gut–brain signalling

  7. Learned food cues

  8. Stress and sleep

  9. Food environment

1. Brain Reward System —

Infographic of human brain reward system with labeled dopamine pathways, nucleus accumbens, VTA, PFC, and reward cycle diagrams.
Brain-reward system

Dopamine signaling

  • motivation

  • reward learning

  • reinforcement

  • cue-driven behaviour

Two young women at a diner; one bites a burger while the other points at her phone. Fries and neon sign glow warmly.
Friends eating together

  • crispy chips

  • creamy chocolate

  • sweetened beverages

  • soft baked snacks

4. “Protein Leverage”

5. Gut–Brain Axis —

Medical infographic of gut-brain axis: torso, intestines, microbiota and brain linked by blue arrows and labels.
Gut-brain axis

  • gastric distension

  • nutrient sensing

  • gut hormones

  • vagal signalling

  • glucose/metabolic responses

6. Stress, Sleep နဲ့ Emotional Eating

Stress, sleep deprivation, emotional state

Stress → chocolate

Movie → chips

7. “Food Addiction”

Craving ≠ addiction

Frequent UPF consumption ≠ clinical food addiction

9. WHO က ဘာပြောထားလဲ?

WHO ရဲ့ healthy-diet guidance မှာ healthy diet ကို adequacy, balance, moderation နဲ့ diversity အပေါ် အခြေခံပြီး fruits, vegetables, pulses, whole grains နဲ့ healthy protein sources များစွာ ပါဝင်တဲ့ dietary pattern ကို အလေးပေးထားပါတယ်။

  • binge-like eating/craving ဖြစ်စေတယ်

“What can we add?”

  • protein-rich foods

  • vegetables

  • fruits

  • legumes

  • whole grains

  • nuts/seeds

Doctor’s Take-Home Message
